THE TRADITIONAL Christmas Day swim in Budleigh
Salterton made a big splash this year, with a bumper turn out of locals.
Around
50 hardy souls took part in the annual fun event from Steamer Steps. Organiser
Larry Morris said usually a good turn out was 30 people.
He was delighted
with the numbers that turned out for this year’s event.
“It was
a fantastic response from locals,” he said. “Everyone had a lot of fun.
It was just a matter of getting in and out of the water. There was no set route
or circuit.
The temperature of the water wasn’t too bad. It’s
the colder air temperature that can
be a bit of a shock. We didn’t have
snow, but there was a brisk wind. The event seems to be growing in popularity
every year.”
Larry, who has taken part in the swim for many years,said
the secret was to ignore the cold. “You just have to take a deep breath and
take the plunge,” he said.
“You get used to the water and it
doesn’t seem to affect you after a while.
“It’s all good
fun and gives you a good appetite for Christmas lunch.”
