Coppin and Silver come to Budleigh

True to its name, Budleigh Assorted Tunes heads into the new year with a fantastic programme of music across all styles, with something, literally, for everyone!

“I struggled for some time to get a programme I was happy with”, says local promoter Steve Chilcott, “…and then, suddenly, it all fell into shape!” Sometimes you are chasing a band like John Tams and the Home Service for months – and in their case for over TWO years! Then it all falls right and tour routes work and bingo! You have a confirmed gig!”

Kicking off 2014, on Sunday, January 26, are singer/songwriter duo Johnny Coppin and Mike Silver.

“I remember Johnny years ago when he fronted that great folk-rock band Decameron, down at the Pipers Folk Club in Penzance, push-starting their rickety tour bus one cold, damp December evening after a packed gig…Geoff March’s cello wobbling dangerously on the roof! Now that’s real rock ‘n’ roll for you!”

Into February and the Strawbs bring their full electric line-up to the Public Hall, featuring original Strawb member, Rick Wakeman’s son, Adam on keyboards. Strawbs’ special guests for the evening will be Steeleye Span’s fiddle maestro Peter Knight and Gigspanner.

“Peter sent a message out on Facebook to say that he was short of a couple of gigs on the Gigspanner tour in March, and I replied saying that I couldn’t do March but I was looking for a quality support for Strawbs in Feb…it didn’t take him long to get back to me with an enthusiastic YES!”

Also in February, Nashville Country star Laura Cantrell comes to BATs with very special guests Flats and Sharps…the only West Country date she is playing on the tour.

“I booked Flats and Sharps to support Port Isaac’s Fisherman’s Friends 18 months ago at the Corn Exchange and they just took the place by storm! They are only young lads, but fantastic musicians playing blistering bluegrass! They don’t even have a driving licence between them so I think they’re coming up from Penzance in a taxi!

“Laura didn’t want any supports on this tour, until I sent her agent a YouTube clip of the lads and that soon changed her mind!’

March 1, brings those veteran Merseybeat legends Gerry and the Pacemakers, followed by Scotland’s Emily Smith Trio on March 16 and the month closes with An Evening with Benny Gallagher on Sunday, March 30 – mainstay of hit-makers McGuinness Flint (When I’m Dead and Gone) and, of course, Gallagher and Lyle who had dozens of hits including Heart on my Sleeve, I Wanna Stay with You, and Breakaway which was also a huge hit for Art Garfunkel.
