Exmouth seafront was echoing to the sound of machinery this week, as contractors began to tear down Elizabeth Hall.
The site was fenced off by Gilpin Demolition last month, and the main demolition work started on Tuesday.
Elizabeth Hall has stood on its site for more than 100 years, and in that time has been used as a clubhouse, aquarium and, most recently, as a community hall.
However, that history has now come to an end as, despite a petition of more than 12,000 signatures calling for the hall to be saved, East Devon District Council (EDDC) agreed to sell the site to Premier Inn.
The hall itself and its toilets will now be removed over the coming days, before construction of the new hotel begins.
EDDC says the hotel will bring economic benefits to the town, as part of its Exmouth Vision.
