Adventurous families have taken the chance to find out more about enjoying the great outdoors at the first open day held by Exmouth Forest School.

The school, a new venture based at Leeford Woods, held the event to showcase some of the activities it will be offering to youngsters and families.

Organisers believe up to 350 people attended during the day, enjoying activities including basic tool use and woodwork, firelighting demonstrations, cooking marshmallows, building dens and a children’s ‘mud kitchen’.

The school is a spin-off from Exeter Forest School, and is operating on a site leased from Clinton Devon Estates.

School manager Nick Murphy said: “It was a great success. We did exactly what we hoped to do, got the word out to Exmouth and the surrounding area that we’re open, and gave an idea of the kind of activities we’re offering.

“It was good to see so many people out in the woods.

“We have had nothing but a good response from everyone we spoke to. We had quite a few enquiries for the future, and the kids all seemed to love it, which is the main point for us.”

The school’s main sessions will begin with toddler groups at the end of July, but it is putting together a full programme for older children and families, as well as birthday parties and schools.
