A MUCH-RESPECTED Budleigh blues band has decided to fold, more than two decades after forming.

Ian Briggs and the Supervampers will be playing its final gig – a free show – on Sunday, January 19, at The Feathers Hotel in Budleigh Salterton at 3pm.

“The band has been together for more than 20 years and feel that the time has come to move on to other things,” Ian told the Journal. “We look forward to meeting any old friends who would like to come along and say goodbye.”

The band has played many festivals and events during its career, and is noted for its fiery, quality performances.

Led by harmonica player Briggs – who has worked with Bernie Marsden (Whitesnake), Dick Heckstall-Smith (Graham Bond Organisation and Colosseum), Savoy Brown and the Yardbirds – recent line-ups have included guitarist Andy Christie (who’s worked with Jim Mullen), veteran drummer Dave Sheen (Kevin Coyne and Richard Thompson) and bassist Chris Harris (currently in Curved Air).

“It’s an amicable split,” said Ian. “I’m 70 this year, and I don’t want to run a band any more. I want to join other people and play with other folk. I’m not giving up playing and the others certainly aren’t because they’re all full-time professionals.”
